We love Chai Latte, in fact we grew up drinking Chai, but its nothing like the artificial syrup added to your tea today at most cafés. In fact Chai Latte is super simple to make, and we always make more to refrigerate, add to smoothies, eat with HIVE Granola (super delicious) or just heat up and take on the go. We use a gingered honey in this recipe but it is not necessary you can always add fresh ginger to the ingredients and if you can have it without honey, even better!
Ingredients for 2 cups
- 2 cups of milk or milk alternative (we use Almond milk)
- 2 Tablespoons Darjeeling tea leaves (we like it strong and dark)
- 1 stick cinnamon
- 5-7 cardamon cloves or 1 teaspoon ground cardamon if you have it
- 2 Cloves
- 1 star anise
- a dash of black pepper
- gingered honey to taste (if you do not have add fresh ginger and honey)
Directions
Place all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat, cover until milk boils, stirring often, turn off heat and let sit for a few minutes. The longer you let it sit the darker and more intense the taste.
Strain and either drink immediately, or top with HIVE granola to have for breakfast or as a snack, this is a great way to really boost your energy! Or drink chilled with ice. Whichever way you choose it is a much healthier alternative than drinking the chai syrup which is basically sugar and aroma.
Reduce Artificial Sweetness
If this is your first time making fresh Chai Latte it may taste too bitter and you would add more honey. Keep in mind that your taste buds get used to sticky artificial sweetness and the more you reduce the artificial flavours and sweetness in your diet your body will no longer be able to withstand them. In fact they may actually even give you a toothache!
So do your body a favour and make your Chai latte fresh as it was intended!
